The MFA Program in Integrated Media Arts (IMA) offers advanced studies in nonfiction media making. The IMA Program educates multi-disciplinary, socially engaged media makers in a diverse range of skills across the media landscape. Last night, 60 people packed Hunter College’s TV studio for a screening of A Home Worth Fighting For… and we could have kept the conversation going for hours. ✊ IMA alum Natasha Florentino’s documentary about NYCHA residents fighting the demolition of the Fulton and Elliott-Chelsea Houses in Chelsea brought together NYCHA residents, activists, urban planners, architects, students, and community members. The 48-Hour Project Challenge is back for its 3rd edition! You’ll work with a mix of IMA students, alumni, and other creative community members (bring your friends!) to make a film or media project in 48 hours. It’s similar to a 48 Hour Film Festival, but IMA’s version is open to documentary, audio-only projects, experimental films, and recorded performance, in addition to narrative films— whatever direction you want to take it. It’s fun to make a short collaborative project, and it also encourages trying something new—maybe you’ll act for the first time, try audio recording, pick up a camera after a long hiatus, or experiment with something outside your comfort zone. It could lead to future collaborations and, if you need to reconnect with making things right now, it could do that too. Through community-engaged projects using video, audio, photography and new media, you’ll explore how art can challenge racial injustice, climate catastrophe, gentrification, and systemic inequality. Work collaboratively to create interventions that go beyond critiquing the world, and  help transform it. Are you ready to explore the space where documentary and fiction collide? This course is for filmmakers who want to push beyond traditional nonfiction—into memory, dreams, the subconscious, and experimental storytelling. Learn to make films that blur boundaries and create entirely new visual languages. Through screenings of groundbreaking hybrid work, critical readings, and hands-on production, you’ll develop the skills to explore your subjects’ interior worlds—their dreams, memories, nightmares, and unspoken truths. What You’ll Explore: → Voiceover as point of view (first-person, fictional narrators, multiple voices) → Visual language for memory, dreams & subjectivity → Re-enactments: from poetic gestures to fully-realized scenes → Working with archival material in inventive, critical ways → Speculative approaches & non-human narrative sources → The essay film, reflexivity, cinematography & montage What You’ll Make: Create 2 hybrid films that reflect your formal experiments and build your own authorial voice. Work individually or collaboratively in a supportive creative community. Student Experience: Past students have created deeply personal, powerful films mixing documentary interviews with sound design, dream logic, recreations, and speculative approaches. Strong community feel with ongoing collaboration beyond the course. Open to filmmakers ready to experiment, take risks, and expand what documentary can be. Filming and editing skills required.
