Lyd, a film by Rami Younis and IMA alum Sarah Ema Friedland is screening at DCTV’s Firehouse Cinema starting tonight! April 28th at 7pm and multiple times until May 2nd.

All details + tickets: https://firehouse.dctvny.org/

“Lyd by Rami Younis & Sarah Ema Friedland, is a feature-length, speculative documentary that follows the rise and fall of Lyd – a 5,000-year-old metropolis that was once a bustling Palestinian town until it was conquered when the State of Israel was established in 1948. As the film unfolds, a chorus of characters creates a tapestry of the Palestinian experience of this city and the trauma left by the massacre and expulsion, while vivid animations envision an alternate reality where the same characters live free from the trauma of the past and the violence of the present. Using never-before-seen archival footage of the Israeli soldiers who carried out the massacre and expulsion, the personified city explains that these events were so devastating that they fractured reality, and now there are two Lyds — one occupied and one free. As the film cuts between fantastical and documentary realities, it ultimately leaves the viewer questioning which future should prevail. Lyd dares to ask the question: what would the city be like had the Israeli occupation of Lyd never happened?”

More about the film: https://lydinexile.com @lydinexile @sarah.friedland

Multidisciplinary artists and IMA thesis students Tara and Indranil Choudhury are having a two-person exhibition at UnionDocs on May 3rd! The opening of the show titled: Feeble Transmitters starts at 7pm and it features paintings, ceramic sculptures, and hybrid objects punctuated with speakers, screens, and projections. “The artists invite the viewer into a world filled with feeble transmitters – devices studded with diminutive portals, gently dispatching sounds and images from other places.”

The week-long show will also feature two live events, programmed around the themes explored in the show. RESONANT CHAMBERS will present an evening of live sound performances on a quadraphonic sound system, featuring artists Jenn Grossman, Shelley Hirsch and IMA Professor Hans Tammen, they’ll investigate the materiality of sound as central to their practice. LIGHT FROM THE OTHER SIDE features a screening of two films exploring the origins of cinema by Zoe Beloff that are shot on 3D B/W 16mm film.
