RSVP to see Neirud! A film by IMA alum Fernanda Faya @fefa_faya

Friday, April 11, 6-9pm - RSVP in the link in bio

Free and open to the public. Seats are going fast.

NEIRUD had its World Premiere at Olhar de Cinema - Curitiba Int’l Film Festival, receiving Best Film and Best Editing awards. After its International Premiere at DOC NYC the film has continued to receive festival awards. Fernanda is currently writing her first fiction feature film script, BETE, which was awarded the SpCine developing fund.

More about Neirud: https://www.neirudfilm.com/ | @@neirud_film

“Growing up, filmmaker Fernanda Roth Faya knew Neirud as her “aunt,” a family member close to her grandmother. What Faya uncovers after Neirud’s death is a mysterious and colorful life, from her time as a wrestler and circus performer to her secret and complicated love triangle. Neirud is a fascinating story about race and identity, and queer life in last century’s Brazil”. – Murtada Elfadl (DOC NYC)

“...Mixing archival film and video footage, Neirud alternates poetic lyricism with poignant anecdotes, the net result is a heartfelt ode to the pioneers of the past who have made today possible.” - Hammer to Nail

After the film there will be a Q&A and discussion with Fernanda Faya and researcher, Flor Barceló.

Flor Barceló is a PhD student in Latin American and Iberian Cultures at Columbia University. They hold a Licenciatura in Letras (BA) by the University of Buenos Aires, where they concentrated on Literary Theory. They worked as research assistant in the Department of Literary Theory and the Department of Feminist Literary Studies and Theories at the University de Buenos Aires. Their research interests include the construction of queer archives, DIY publications (magazines and fanzines) produced by LGBT+ activists from Latin America and España, subjectivity and grievable lives under neoliberalism, and literature written during the AIDS epidemics.

We’re excited to have filmmaker Stephen Maing on site this week as a Sainsbury Film and Media visiting artist.

Last night we screened Union by Brett Story and Stephen Maing and today (Wed March 26, starting at 2:30pm) Stephen will be giving an artist talk, titled:

“Breaking and Remaking the Character-Driven Documentary“

About the talk: “Empathy for individual protagonists, and their story arcs, are the lifeblood of many documentary films. What are some drawbacks of character-driven storytelling, and how can we expand documentary vocabulary and form to convey complex stories of power and collectivity? Stephen Maing will draw on his own films and experiences to explore these timely and critical questions.”

More info about his visit: https://fm.hunter.cuny.edu/mar-25-26-visiting-artist-stephen-maing/

IMA Student A.J. Cincotta Eichenfield @a.j.c_e has three etchings in a group exhibition called After Image 003 @aftertimecollective

His prints are part of an ongoing project about his great grandparents’ immigration from the volcanic island of Stromboli. They were created by exposing screenshots of webcam videos of Stromboli’s eruptions onto photopolymer plates, which were then transferred on an etching press using carbon typewriter paper found in his late grandparents’ Brooklyn garage.

AFTER IMAGE 003, curated by Luiza Lukova, is the third iteration of an annual group exhibition at after / time collective gallery in Portland Oregon. AFTER IMAGE 003 features 21 artists each responding through their respective studio practices to the status and future of the image, its traces, its inherent non-neutrality, its topography, its relation to space and its possibilities in a mediatized world awash with claims to the concept of the image.

Show Dates: March 6-30, 2025
Gallery Hours: Tues/Thurs 6-8; Sat 12-5

after / time is an artist-run gallery and experimental curatorial platform located in Portland, Oregon.

A.J. made this work in the Art MFA printmaking course with Alva Mooses. It’s an expansion of work he’s been making at IMA.

*IMA students can take up to 6 grad credits outside of the program toward the IMA degree.
