IMA alum Dylan Gauthier @dylan__gauthier__ and Natalie Conn @natalieelizconn are included in a group exhibition at the Parsons School of Design called, In Plain View: Transforming Freshkills from Landfill to Landscape which has an opening reception on January 29th at the Aronson library, Parsons - 66 5th Avenue, NYC

A few years ago Dylan co-facilitated an artist residency with Mariel Villere called Freshkills Park: Field R/D that researched and made work about Freshkills.

This group exhibition is sharing work made by the artists during that residency as well as group work made by Sound the Mound. Natalie documented portions of the residency and her photographs are included in the exhibition alongside other photographers’ work.

More about the show:

www.inplainview.nyc | @InPlainView_Freshkills

“Projects by Sound the Mound and Freshkills Park: Field R/D artists operate at the intersections of art, ecology, and technology to address our complex relationship with Freshkills, while archival and historical materials situate us within a grander context of waste and urban renewal. As Staten Islanders and the surrounding boroughs navigate this rewilding process, we face critical questions: How do we honor and remember the land’s past lives while embracing a new technologically orchestrated “natural” space? Now that the land has been dramatically altered and the landfill closed, how is New York City’s millions of tons of waste managed and disposed of? Where does the trash go now? The story of Freshkills Park invites us to reflect on the causes of past environmental challenges and the future of spaces once considered irredeemable

The exhibition explores the park’s identity through dystopian, and utopian lenses, and invites visitors to confront questions about refuse, re-naturing, and the future of spaces once considered irredeemable. Featuring 14 artists, five photographers, and the outcomes of a longstanding curatorial collaboration, the exhibition weaves a narrative of transformation, from destruction to resilience and recovery. 🔹🔹🔹 dates : Jan 27–March 2, 2025

Highlighting Spring IMA class

Sites: Sounds: Process: Place - Times Square Red, Times Square Blue

with multimedia artist and professor Kara Lynch

Mondays, 2-5pm - Hybrid (so some sessions are in person and some are online)

There are a few spots available and it’s open to IMA students and grad students in other Hunter and CUNY programs.

Just email: Natalie at imamfaassistant@gmail.com for any questions and to enroll

This class is open to all mediums including film, audio, performance, installation, animation, public participatory art

Description:
Participants will generate experiments, prototypes, proposals, and works in progress, and interdisciplinary research projects that listen deeply to the city/place as site and intervene into public space. In addition to close reading of the text, we will also explore ‘deep listening’ through on-site exercises, and we will consider interdisciplinary approaches to site-specific and site-sensitive integrated media art practices. The thematic focus of the seminar will critically engage issues of place-making, public and private space, memory, aftermath, the archive, and public demonstration. This course will focus on developing methods and tools to approach installation and media making as practices in conversation with diverse media: video, digital, audio, photo, film, performance, and the plastic arts. Each participant will link these discussions and exercises to their respective practices and research projects. Participants in this course will choose their locations for research — there are no restrictions on that. We will do some exercises/experiments in the Times Square area. Students do not need to do their research projects in Times Square or New York City; that said New York City will be our muse - just as it is for Samuel Delany and others. This is a hybrid, synchronous course meeting in person and on zoom.

IMA alum Yehui Zhao @yehui_zhao recently published an interview with filmmaker Lynne Sachs @lynnesachs1 (who often teaches an intensive class at IMA that merges poetic film and performance)

The interview is called “A Troupe of Twenty-Four Images Marches” which is a quote from a line in Lynne’s poetry book, Year by Year Poems (Tender Buttons Press, 2019).

And it’s published 128 Lit @128lit a publication co-founded by Yehui Zhao and Andrew Felsher with many collaborators.

Yehui summarizes the conversation with Lynne :

“From Lynne’s first Super 8mm film in 1983 to her approach to filmmaking and writing today, the conversation explores how history seeps into our intimate lives, the practicalities of finishing a film, accumulating details to locate meaning, working from the center, implied power relationships between directors and participants, female directors, performance and the body in space, the filmmaker’s position within cultural norms and expectations, puncturing the hermetic space of the film set, war, poetry, recent projects, and much much more!”

Read it here! https://www.128lit.org/lynne-sachs-yehui-zhao-interview
